COURSE DESCRIPTION: This online course is a combination of the IWA Weight Training Certification and Strength Training Program Design seminars without the onsite certification component and therapy applications. It is ideal for those who are working with, or want to work with, personal fitness training clients or for therapists who need to enhance their current understanding of resistance training.

Effective Strength Training explores the latest scientific principles and theories related to resistance training, as well as practically analyzing exercise techniques for over 100 upper body, lower body and trunk exercises. Upon completion of this course you will have a good understanding of proper lifting techniques, body mechanics for each exercise, and the "why" behind each approach. You will explore solutions for exercise situations where the relative risk of the exercise is high in relation to the training goals and known orthopedic concerns.

In his book produced for the IWA, Effective Strength Training, Douglas Brooks, M.S. defines and discusses resistance training systems, periodization principles and a continuum of training programs. He provides a wealth of additional information that includes resistance training philosophy, program design and resistance training guidelines. Photos and illustrations enhance and clarify the information presented in the course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: To provide the fitness or health professional with both the theory and practical information necessary to create safe and effective strength training programs for all types of clients. Participants will complete this home study course with a good understanding of:

  • Proper strength training techniques for over 100 upper body, lower body and trunk exercises
  • Modifications for different populations and variations in equipment that can be used to execute each exercise
  • Theoretical and practical reasons behind different strength training approaches
  • How to objectively and scientifically evaluate controversial exercises to determine risk versus effectiveness

PRE-REQUISITES: This course is available to all licensed Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants, Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants, Massage Therapists as well as Athletic Trainers.

CEUs:
Physical Therapists - Please check with your state licensing board in regards to how many hours they allow for home study courses and proceed accordingly. The IWA has pursued pre-approval in various states such as Ohio and Florida however, this course meets the criteria for Physical Therapy Continuing Education in all states which require it.

Occupational Therapists - The IWA is an AOTA Provider of Continuing Education (provider #4003) and this course is worth 1.2 Level 1 AOTA CEUs / 12 Contact Hours.
